Simply because a subject has been used before doesn't make a work unoriginal - otherwise it would be impossible for images of pretty ladies or majestic animals to be original. And simply because the artist didn't come up with a character off the top of their head doesn't make a work unoriginal - otherwise it would be impossible for religious or historical artwork to be original.
An artwork featuring Naruto, Mario, Darth Vader, or Harry Potter is fully capable of being less, just as, or more original than an artwork featuring Original Character #34571098.
I can't stand people saying something is not original just because he/she "saw something similar somewhere once long ago". What do they want? that artists forsake their knowledge and culture, become gods and then come up with a whole universe of their own?
